Track Subscriptions on WhatsApp Without Bank Sync: Find Forgotten Charges

Subscriptions are designed to be forgotten. A free trial that rolled into a paid plan, an app you used twice, a streaming service you kept "for one show". Each charge is small, which is exactly why they pile up. Here's how to find them, cut the ones you don't use, and keep the rest under control.

Why subscriptions get out of hand

  • They're small. $9.99 doesn't trigger the same reaction as a $200 purchase.
  • They're automatic. You decide once, and the charge repeats forever.
  • Trials convert quietly. Most free trials become paid plans unless you cancel.
  • Prices creep. Services raise prices, and the new amount just shows up.
  • They're scattered. Some are on a card, some in app stores, some bundled with your phone plan.

The 10-minute subscription audit

  1. Open your last two card and bank statements. Look for any charge that repeats.
  2. Check your app store subscriptions. On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android: Play Store → your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
  3. Search your email for "receipt", "renewal", "your plan" and "trial".
  4. Write every one down with its price and billing day.
  5. For each, ask: did I use this in the last 30 days? Would I sign up again today at this price?

Anything that fails both questions is a cancellation candidate.

Keeping subscriptions in check in WhatsApp

Once you know what you pay for, record each subscription as a recurring expense in POQT:

"Netflix $15.99 every day 10"
"Spotify $11.99 every day 22"
"Gym $45 every day 1"

POQT reminds you before each charge and records it when you confirm with "Paid Netflix". A reminder a day or two before a renewal is often exactly the nudge you need to cancel something you stopped using.

To see the total, ask:

"How much do I spend on subscriptions per month?"

For free trials, set a reminder the moment you sign up:

"Remind me to cancel the Hulu trial on October 12"

Why not just use bank sync?

Bank-linked apps can spot recurring charges, but they only see them after you've paid, and they need access to your accounts. Recording subscriptions yourself takes a few minutes once, and gives you reminders before the charge instead of a report after it.

A cancellation checklist

  • Cancel before the renewal date, not on it.
  • Take a screenshot of the cancellation confirmation.
  • Check whether you need to cancel in the app store rather than on the website.
  • Download anything you want to keep first.
  • Remove the recurring expense from POQT so your budget stays accurate.

How much should subscriptions cost you?

There's no universal number, but a useful rule: subscriptions are "wants" in a 50/30/20 budget. If they take up a large share of your wants, trim the ones you use least.
