Common questions

What is the 50/30/20 rule?
It splits take-home pay into 50% needs, 30% wants, and 20% savings or debt. It is a good starting point, but it assumes a typical income. This tool adjusts it for your income, household, and country.
Should I use gross or net income?
Use net income: the amount that actually lands in your account after tax and mandatory deductions. If you share costs with a partner, add both take-home amounts.
Why are my percentages different from 50/30/20?
Essentials take a bigger share at lower incomes and a smaller share at higher ones, and kids, rent, or a car change the picture. We follow the rule where it is realistic and adjust where it is not.
How big should my emergency fund be?
Aim for 3 to 6 months of essential costs. Choose 6 if you have kids, a single income, or irregular pay. Start with one month so surprises do not land on a credit card.
